I accidentally inhaled/ingested a big whiff of this hot thick fume as I was talking to someone while walking over one of these on the sidewalk. I assume I was on/near one of those grates over the subway, or a sewer manhole right near it; I didn’t look back to narrow it down precisely. In either case, what is the air composed of? Why is this a thing in NYC?
