I have lived in NYC for three years and never got to know my neighbors. They never knocked on my door, and I never knocked on theirs. The only time I saw them was when we waited for the elevator.
It’s not like I didn’t want to know them, but it always felt intrusive to approach them. They’re retirees, parents, married couples, etc. While I’m a 26 year old hermit who works from home and only leaves the house to buy food.
We’re part of different demographics and they seem content treating the complex as a place of isolation and solitude.
However, I love cooking and baking, and for a long time that was enough. But after developing pre-diabetes, I had to stop. There’s just no healthy way to bake a cake for one that’s worth the effort (at least in my opinion). To be honest, I’m not even sure how one could bake a cake for one unless they’re able to crack just a third of an egg.
So here’s my idea: I’d like to keep baking, but pawn the goods off to my neighbors.
How would you feel if the strange man next door knocked on your door offering you a free pie?
