I was walking home from the gym this morning around 7 am when this shorter woman (for context I am 5’1 F and she was considerably shorter than me) approaches me with a covid mask on. She had a bit of a speech impediment but also was visibly very upset explaining that she was trying to get home on the LIRR but while she was taking the bus earlier was pickpocketed. I originally thought she was asking for directions and it was light out and a bunch of people were outside already so I felt a bit safer stopping, especially because she seemed so distraught. She explained the fees of the train and the Uber from the train. There was a bit more back story but i felt horrible because she was having trouble getting the words out and was crying quite a bit. I definitely have been suckered by street scammers because I have trouble saying no and my sympathy gets the best out of me and I ended up giving her the cash to get home. This was all by my apartment and my anxiety is getting the best of me thinking that this was a larger ploy. Do we think this was a scam or does this seem genuine?
