Fast paced? Sure. Efficient? Sure. But whenever I’ve visited NYC, I find people to be shockingly friendly, welcoming and very kind. The stereotypes do not seem to hold up in real life. Whether it’s locals or transplants that I’ve talked to. I go to NY frequently and stay for extended periods because it’s where my GF is from. I tripped in Manhattan once and like 5 strangers ran over to make sure I was okay and then asked if I needed directions. They were very nice even though they were obviously in a rush.

I grew up in Miami, and I currently live in Chicago. And I actually find people in NYC friendlier than people in Miami or Chicago. I’ve found when NYers move to Chicago they tend to have differing opinions. Some find Chicagoans more friendly, but it seems a lot, if not the majority that I’ve met, actually find NYers more friendly. Part of this is because NYers tend to be more likely to engage with you rather than outright ignoring you. And they seem significantly more open to meeting new people. And the time in downtown Chicago I tripped and fell over (I’m clumsy), no one stopped to help. People just kept walking around me acting as if I was just an inconvenience on their way to work.

Also, surprised to say this but I noticed in NY more people actually stopped for me at crosswalks than they tend to in Chicago. In Chicago it’s ridiculously common for you to walk out into a cross walk and people with literally just swerve around you (sometimes into the other lane) so they can keep going. And oftentimes you’ll be in the middle of the crosswalk and like 10-20 cars will keep going and will strand you. I’ve even been honked at and cussed out for simply using the crosswalk here. And this isn’t an isolated experiences. It’s happened many times to all of my friends and my GF. Just the other day she saw a pedestrian go into a crosswalk and a driver laid on their horn, rolled down the window, and screamed “Get out of the fucking street, asshole!”. These experiences have completely contrasted with this friendly Chicagoan prerogative people tend to push on reddit. Not sure if any of you have experiences like that in NY?
