Did I get scammed by a kid on the subway?

Today, I was riding the A home from work minding my own business listening to music. Suddenly, a 12 year old kid approached me and asked me something while showing me a clipboard, mind you this was at 11pm and he was alone, but I did the usual “no” shrug and didn’t hear what he said. He moved along and asked other people for what seemed like money.

A lady finally accepted and was trying to send him some money through an app. However, she had to get off at the next stop and while the kid desperately held the doors, she could not get the app to work and she had to leave.

The kid asked one more person for money and they said no. The kid turned around and started crying. I couldn’t help but feel bad, I told him to come over and asked him what was up.

He said he needed $300 for something related to basketball and was $25 dollars short.
Now, I am not rich, but giving $25 dollars to a kid so he stops crying is worth my money. I asked him, “if I give you $25 dollars you can go home?” and he said yes.

I said, “give me a second and I will send you the money through Venmo.” I logged in and sent him the money. Got off at my stop and told him to stay safe.

Did I get scammed? Is that kid ok? I am just curious.
