Was it hearing a loud boom when the first plane hit? Or looking towards Lower Manhattan and seeing a big plume of smoke? Or hearing a bunch of police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances screaming by headed for Lower Manhattan? Or being sent home from work or school early for (what might have felt like at the time) no particular reason? I’m just wanting to get a feel for the various ways in which New Yorkers who weren’t within sight of the Twin Towers when the planes hit them eventually found out about the enormity of the events that were unfolding in their city.
