How do New Yorkers feel about being approached and talked to by a random stranger?

As in what’s your thoughts before they say or do anything else and they’re just approaching you.

Especially in a public space, like on a subway train, platform, sidewalk, the park, etc…

Apparently this is a normal American thing, but compared to like California I’ve noticed this is proportionally less common in NYC
