I know this is kind of a stupid question but I’m really desperate. I (32) was laid off from a software engineering job I hated about two years ago, and right around that time my spouse and father were both hospitalized with terminal illnesses and my entire family was sued for an unfathomable sum of money after an at-fault car accident. Right now, I’m still unemployed, still not fully functioning after the complete collapse of my mental health in that time, and I’m getting ready to go bankrupt with whatever meager money I have left.

I need to make money. I missed my rent for the first time this month. My SWE skills are not where they need to be to be at all competitive in the field (especially the way it is right now) and my only real skills are cooking and teaching, but I have no formal experience in those fields. I’d be a barista, a server, a line cook, whatever, but I don’t have the resume for it.

I don’t have a family I can move in with any more and I’m overwhelmed by all of this. I have no idea what to do. Using Indeed and LinkedIn to apply to jobs has been a waste of time. I consider it extremely lucky that I’ve never been in this position before but never having had the experience I have no idea how to handle it. Can someone please offer some advice or suggest a path forward?
