Identity as New Yorker vs. American

I’ve been thinking about how I identify as a New Yorker first and American second, a sentiment which several people I’ve talked to have agreed with. I think a big part of it is that my political awareness started with the 2016 election, and thus the polarization and lack of unity in the Trump era is the norm for me. Because of that, along with the fact that I was born in and have lived in NYC my whole life, I identify more with the city than the country.

So, I was wondering whether this holds true for most people in the city, and figured I should post here to get some opinions. Do you guys identify as a New Yorker or American more, or both in equal measure? I would also appreciate it if you guys could explain why you feel that way.
