Is going to a family shelter safe?

So basically, here’s the story. I’m 19 years old now and me and my family are about to be homeless. My dad was a superintendent of the building we lived in, but in recent years he got caught up with addiction and alcoholism. So after a whole year and a half of slacking, the company fired him and we gotta be out soon. The only ones working now are my oldest brother. I was working until I had to leave my job at an ice cream shop due to seasonal closing in November. My mom is mentally ill and can’t work, and my older brother (middle child) is also mentally disabled.

It’s been really hard for us lately. I have been applying to a ton of jobs just to help out but to no luck. We did save up to get an apartment when we moved and went to housing court for it to stretch our stay. My main goal for me is to get a job and provide. I wanted to go to college but since this happened, I kinda can’t. Now here’s the real question. If worst comes to worst and we can’t find an apartment by then or have the money for one AND we have to go to a shelter. Would it be the best option or the safest? We are an adult family of five and need a place to stay eventually. But I don’t know the exact detail of these shelters. How would I know it’s decent for us, especially with a mentally ill mom and a disabled brother. I know shelters aren’t all that amazing and wonderful experiences, but I want to make sure we have our own space where we aren’t separated or dealing with any danger. I know how to get assistance like SNAP and all that, but I just need to know everything before we make this big decision. What exactly do I need to do or follow to help us out of this situation? Any resources or urgent steps to take?

I’d really appreciate it 🙂
