Jewish Men in Crown Heights Mad at me?

I’m in town visiting my partner and just took a walk around Crown Heights where a large Hasidic Jewish community lives. I was stopped by multiple people asking if I am Jewish. One or two even uttered some Hebrew words under their breath directed at me. A decrepit man even gave me a look of sheer contempt before questioning me for “smiling by a trash can” before spitting near my feet in disgust and using other choice words. Am I missing something?

I wore a bright orange t-shirt and I am from Eastern Europe so I suppose I have some Jewish features but I am not Jewish. Could they be mad that I’m not wearing a kippah close to Sabbath? I would chalk up any one of these to coincidence but all together, it felt a little bizarre.
