Shop NYC Top

So I’m from a small town an hour away from Boston and I recently went to NYC for a few days to see a concert (not from there, never lived there). I was trying to travel from Queens to Manhattan and got off this one subway stop when some guy knocked on the emergency exit from the outside. I saw the sign, thought that the emergency exit might go off and possibly alarm cops, and with my friend telling me so many insane stories about strangers in NYC, I decided to just not let him in. The guy sucked his teeth, literally jumped over the turnstile, then let some other old man in. He then gave me this annoyed look while walking past me and goes, “Does the same shit, the fuck?”

There was no cops around, I was unaware the emergency exit didn’t go off, and was also one of the only two people in the subway waiting for the train. I was so confused and I didn’t do it only because I wasn’t trying to get in trouble and possibly get a far more expensive ticket. What was the right thing to do? What should I have done?
