So yea… the apartment before this we were paying around $130 for electric. We just got the new bill and it’s over $900. Landlord sent a picture of it and we saw upstairs is paying over $1200 just for electricity. We pay around $2,800 every month in rent.
I checked the heaters in all of our rooms. Big one takes 2500 watts and two others are 1500 watts, and since we have been in the big storm we’ve had to keep them on pretty much 24/7.
We’re pretty freaked out and really not sure what to do. Ever since we got the bill we have kept all heating off, it genuinely feels like outside in here. I have asthma that gets real bad in the cold and i’m the one who stays at home so we have to keep the 1500 watts bedroom heater on. We basically keep the lights off at all times, even before the bill came in.
We very much can’t afford bills like that and we’re really trying to figure out how to avoid the bill getting so high while we’re here.
edit: mini update. figured out the meter is for TWO apartments. I left a note for the neighbors to contact. My family is not from here and did not understand it’s not normal for him to tell them to cancel electric. the landlord has put the electric in his name and made my family pay it back. We are now in the process of figuring it all out.
edit 2: we believe he was separating the electric bill by square footage. upstairs neighbors have stairs so we think that’s why they’re being charged more. He sent a breakdown of how much electricity we used everyday, which still made genuinely no sense and there would be no way for him to even know that info.
edit3: found old listings and new public info. this place was illegally converted and still listed as a commercial building. i checked the bill and it says non residential.
