Asking this question in case I’m missing some sort of language/culture aspect to this phrase.
My super, who is Dominican, always responds with “it’s okay” or “it’s okay, don’t worry” whenever I bring up some sort of complaint and it’s really frustrating because I’m bringing it up because it’s not okay with me. His English communication is fine, definitely speaks English, but it’s clearly not his first language.
Most recent example, I went to the laundry room and he was working on something. I asked if I could still use them and he said I could. I loaded up the machines and left. I come back and the electrical power on one side of the laundry room is off, I open the machines and my laundry is soaking wet as it stopped mid-cycle. I moved my sopping wet laundry to another bank of machines to run it again.
Pretty pissed, I go back up to my apartment to get detergent so I could run it again, and when returned he had turned the power back on. I tell him that the machine stopped mid-cycle because the power was turned off, expecting some sort of apology, but he just said “it’s okay.” I told him that I have to run the laundry again because he turned off the power, and of course to this he said “it’s okay, don’t worry.”
I didn’t want to say more and lose my cool because ultimately I want to maintain a good relationship as he’s my super. I just put the laundry in and left, but I don’t know why he responds like this.
I’m hoping there’s something I’m missing about these interactions. This has happened several times with other issues I’ve raised. Any insights?
