I saw a group of 20-something’s on a train platform around 3pm today (Chambers, but prob doesn’t matter). They were a bit loud but otherwise not bothering anyone or doing anything sketchy. Uniformed NYPD (it was a pair of officers patrolling the platform) went over and non-aggressively, in fact in almost a friendly way, asked to see their IDs. My train came before I could see how it ended but it made me think… if the police ask for your ID and you’re not doing anything wrong, not caught up as a witness to anything, literally just minding your own biz, do you have to comply?
Note, I’m talking specifically about NYPD and not ICE agents.
