Someone broke into my apartment last night through the fire escape

EDIT: it couldn’t have been someone who lived in the building or mistakenly came inside. I have lots of toiletries on my bathroom window sill and he carefully removed them to come inside and put them out on the escape.

Last night around 3:30AM I woke up and a man was in my apartment. I quickly shouted “Who are you?!” “What are you doing?!?” In which he then profusely apologized and ran out the front door. I didn’t get to see him because the lights were off.

He had entered my apartment through my bathroom window which I had left open ajar with the screen door on for ventilation. I live in Fort Greene, and never in a million years in all the apartments I’ve lived I thought this could happen. I’m very traumatized by it because for a split second I didn’t know what he would do to me. I still confused what the intention was. For context, I live on a 5th floor apartment and usually robberies occur in the first 2 floors. What was he going to do? Rob me and go out back the bathroom window? Run down 5 floors of stairs? I’m just confused and wondering if this has happened to anybody. He didn’t take anything or do anything. His voice when he apologized sounded quite young.

The police said the ladder to the fire escape was too low to the ground and that’s how he got in.
Everybody, lock your windows at night.
