Turns out I’m paying for all of my neighbor’s ConEd – anyone have this experience?

So the building that I’m renting in (in brooklyn) has three units – Unit 1, Unit 2 (me) and Unit 3 (likely not a legal unit). I’ve found that there are only 2 ConEd meters for the building – one for Unit 1 and one that powers Unit 2 & 3. My lease states that i pay my own power. Unit 3’s lease states that the Landlord is paying their power.

The building was bought and redone by the current owner a few years ago, so they have known this whole time that my unit is actually paying for Unit 3’s power as well.

These aren’t small power bills – it’s a poorly insulated building with electric heat, so some winter bills have been over $1500.

Has anyone else had a similar situation? How did you resolve it?

I’ve read into the Shared Meter rules, but I don’t know how this stuff actually works out in real life.
