I am genuinely confused. Here on reddit, and on Twitter/X and other social media sites, people continually write: “It’s so expensive, dirty, full of homeless people, and I see rats! I smell urine! I saw someone dealing drugs!”

I am really at a loss regarding what they think a city of 8.3 million people with many of the most lucrative industries in the world headquartered here will actually be like. On top of the fact that NY state has numerous, humane laws and programs for homeless, migrants, and other vulnerable populations. This attracts and retains all kinds of people. Some of them are troubled! New York does not even crack the top ten in terms of violent crimes nationwide. That would be red cities and states.

Not to mention that it attracts the most ambitious, hungry, talented people in the world seeking to make their mark–for good and ill. Some of them are evil. Welcome to humanity!

Do they really expect it to be managed and present like Disneyland?
