Why do out of towners perceive new york to be so dangerous?

Everytime i date a girl from jersey or Pennsylvania. They always ask me if new york is super dangerous which is mind boggling to me because i lived in nyc for 25 years (been here since i was 4) and i never felt like nyc was that dangerous.

Put it this way, i grew up in brooklyn (sunset park) and i never personally witness any shoot outs in person growing up. The worst i seen in person was some high school kids getting jumped.

I also visit some of the worse neighborhoods in the city pretty often since i dated girls from those neighborhoods (soundview, east new york, brownsville, east flatbush, jamaica queens) and while they do seem alot more dangerous than my own neighborhood. Its not like a warzone as these out of towners describe

Truth be told, i feel alot more unsafe when i visit my out of town girlfriends in trenton, newark, philly, allentown pa,

The vibe is way more spooky and third world looking in these cities. So why are they scared of new york if their own home city looks way more dangerous and easier access to guns over there?
