Why do so many people in NJ think NYC is some dangerous warzone?

Before anyone jumps in with “nobody actually thinks that,” I can tell you from my own experience that plenty of people in NJ really do talk about NYC like it’s some kind of dangerous warzone. Every time the idea of going into the city comes up, I hear the same kind of comments like it’s unsafe, dirty or just not worth the risk.

But every time I’m actually in Manhattan or Brooklyn, it just feels like a normal big city. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it’s hardly the post-apocalyptic picture people paint.

So why do you think this perception is so common here? Is it just leftover stereotypes from the 70s/80s? Media exaggeration from the post or fox news?
