So the question why is my power bill so expensive gets asked here fairly regularly. Every time its asked you get a slew of answers essentially blaming a person for running AC or using big appliances or whatever. However, the answer I never seem to see is why is it so expensive here in the first place.
Like in places like Houston or Atlanta which are hotter (this heat wave is normal summer), people live in apartments almost twice the size of the average new yorker, have bigger appliances, central AC and don’t have power bills that cross 100$ (speaking from actual experience). Yet over here when you live in a walkup and your only real appliance is a medium sized refrigerator and you have a single window internet the power bill is some how 200$. It feels like we are paying 3 to 5 times more for power than other parts of the country.
Edit: For people who don’t get the question. I am asking why is it almost 30 cents per kilowatt in New York, while its 15 cents per kilowatt in Atlanta and Houston. Why are energy costs so much higher here.
edit: so a lot of people assume that I am trying to lower my bill. I am not, my power bill is what I expected. The question was prompted because I know that I use less energy here and am paying a lot more than I did in other parts of the country.
