Women of NYC : How do you turn down men in a way that they actually leave you alone?

I recently moved to the city, and this country. So forgive me for not being comfortable with strangers initiating conversations when I’m clearly occupied & asking for my contact details after 4 seconds of smalltalk.

I can handle being hit on at bars, house parties, and such. That happens back home too, so I know how to navigate that environment. But I don’t want to have to have a conversation with a stranger when I’m in the middle of a meal, engrossed in a book, obviously have airpods on, etc.

More importantly, I’m may be yet to grasp what’s considered rude here. The other day a man asked for my Snapchat & I obviously said ‘no’. His immediate response : ‘Why?’. Like????

So, please help me with ways to avoid these interactions. I shouldn’t have to pause my life and interact with strangers I have no interest in, just because they decided to be mildly physically attracted to me.
