Just got offered a “job opportunity” at a karaoke hookah lounge in Brooklyn where they want me to work THREE full weekend shifts for free as a “trial” before deciding if they even want to hire me 😭😭💀
Not shadowing. Not training for an hour. Actual busy weekend shifts working with customers.
And the pay after that? $11/hour + “maybe good tips”.
Mind you, they already knew I had experience and literally invited me there themselves.
What makes it even crazier is that this place was apparently already shut down before over alcohol license issues, yet they’re still trying to get free labor out of people during their busiest nights.
I genuinely don’t understand how some businesses think this is normal. Free labor during the busiest days of the week while they test whether you’re “worthy” enough to maybe get hired later is insane to me.
Has anyone else dealt with this type of exploitative restaurant/lounge/nightlife culture in NYC? Especially in immigrant circles
